Whats next for wIMG

first of all when i designed wIMG (i basically just finished actually its not even 100% finished) i did not know that there was a maximum amount of files that a linux ext3 filesystem can contain. So i have designed a system that was gonna save millions of tiny files on the system.

now while i was developing my new version of atsameip. which i also wanted to make create millions of little files, i started getting a "no space left on device" message and couldnt create anymore folders on the system!!

turns out i ran out of inodes

so the only viable solution now is to redesign all this... now at least i know better...

so first im gonna make atsameip 3.1 with a new different filesystem that will have a limited amount of files of limited size. that will give me some practice after im gonna do the same for here, but im pretty sure ill be able to develop that in the background so there should be virtually no downtime on wIMG or only very little when i kick in the new system.

i also have a million other things and other websites to keep up with at the same time so its not possible for me to do only that or tell exactly when its gonna happen and how long its gonna take but on the bright side like i said there shall be no downtime on wIMG during the development of this *fix

next when that first problem is out of the way the next step is to create the script that ppl can put on their page and all the links automatically will be previewed with wIMG when the user passes their mouse over them, also you will be able to specify to either change all the links or only the links from a certain list of css classes. that should be rather trivial while its still important to take the time to develop it well.

after that will be time to inaugurate the premium version of wIMG. while the free version will sign the shots with a small wimg.ca in the bottom right corner, the premium version will allow a domain to display unsigned shots for a very small fee (the fee is undecided but i was thinking something of the order of 1 canadian dollar per domain per month...). of course the free service will remain and still be unlimited and support all the options, so you will never have to pay. But those who want to give their site a bit more integrity will be able to get rid of the wimg.ca signature in the shots for a very small fee.

and well then finally i will want to create yet again another filesystem for wIMG, once again this shall be developed in background causing virtually no downtime. this last file system shall be a bit more work to create but should allow me to save a giant amount of pics in a very optimally small size.

and well if i ever get that far i shall be sitting on a pretty good system. so thats the plan for wIMG.

So I just want to bring this information up to date:

The file systems that created millions of little files for wimg.ca and atsameip.com have been replaced by a fantastic invention of mine that I like to call the "Dat System". The Dat System is basically a wacky home-made database replacement, it is really fast and works with a very limited amount of files by bundling many information in each file. I been using it for already about 6 months and it appears to be really fast and reliable, so you can consider this problem fully solved.

Also for the matter where I plan to split the wIMG service in 2 levels, free and unsigned, I still plan to do this because its basically the business model of wIMG, but keep in mind that both service level will always stay 100% unlimited, the only difference between the free and the unsigned service will be that the free service will show a small, almost transparent wimg.ca in the bottom right corner of each screenshot.

I was already showing the small almost transparent wimg.ca signature in the corner of the screenshots a while ago when i started, but since the purchase form for the unsigned service was not ready, I have decided to remove the signature temporarily and now I am still planning to run this with no signature for a while, to keep testing the reliability of the system a bit longer and to give me the time to get around and build that form to purchase the unsigned service.

And finaly i want you to know that I plan to make the unsigned service really cheap (about 1 dollar a month or less) and to make the signature on the free service really pale too! So you dont need to worry

Hey! thanks for your comment.

Yes feel free to use wIMG in any project you would like, there are no plans to ever stop providing this service anytime soon.

Refer to the manual to see how to use wIMG.

The development of wIMG has continued these last months. Some internal changes have greatly reduced the time it takes to take each screenshot. And the two levels of service, free and unsigned are now fully in place. Refer to the manual for more information.
